Near the end of June 2015, I met a friend (one of my former students) in Hangzhou (the capital of Zhejiang Province) for a weekend. We were a bit unlucky with the weather (rain) and a weekend is not nearly long enough to get to know this amazing place.
I stayed centrally in a small hostel for foreigners, which was around the corner from a major street market. Sunny stayed in a different hostel for Chinese only. So we would meet up and spend much of our time around the famous West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. There wasn’t much time or inclination to go anywhere else, even though it was very crowded, in the rain.
