The People’s Park/People’s Square

Every municipality has a People’s Square. QHD has a park as well. At one end there is a children’s play area with various rides for smaller children, an outdoor roller-skating arena, and a lake with boats for hire, then comes a hill with views all around, then, across a road, is the Square.

The People’s Park is popular among families with young children. Older children and teenagers use it for roller-skating and meeting their boyfriends or girlfriends. People also like to practice there on musical instruments or singing– possibly because their neighbours have complained back at home.

The thing I liked best about the park was the presence of an exceptionally good ice-cream vendor.

Looking back at the park before crossing the road to the Square

As in most other towns, the People’s Square is a popular place where people gather in the evenings to exercise and dance in groups to recorded music, often played on inadequate equipment played at high volume, with a lot of distortion. Although interesting as a Chinese cultural phenomenon, that’s really not my kind of thing, so having experienced it elsewhere, I never went to QHD’s People’s Square in the evening.

During the day, the Square is used for exhibitions, markets, a starting place for events, and simply as a place to meet friends, fly a kite, or play games. There are restaurants and a cinema underneath the square.
